Chemical Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyse, and optimise an automotive hydrogen fuel system, including the electrolyser, pressure vessel, and PEM fuel cell. 

  • Develop and implement methods for efficient hydrogen production, storage, and use. 

  • Create detailed engineering diagrams such as Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) to map out processes and systems.

Requriements

  • Must be studying a Bachelor of Materials Science and Engineering (Honours) 

  • Completed MATS1192 (or equivalent) with a strong understanding of Materials Science fundamentals.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the next-generation solar car, Sunswift 8, by focusing on sustainable and innovative materials for the chassis, interior, renewable energy systems, alternative energy storage or conducting a Life Cycle Assessment on the vehicle. 

 

Responsibilities

1. Chassis Materials Selection: 

  • Evaluate and propose sustainable materials for the chassis construction, considering factors such as strength, weight, and environmental impact particularly in relation to the body panels, doors, subframes and crash-structures.  

  • Conduct rigorous material testing and analysis to ensure the selected materials are ADR (Australian Design Rules) compliant to meet road safety regulations. 

​

2. Interior Materials Innovation: 

  • Explore and recommend eco-friendly materials for the car's interior, balancing aesthetics, comfort, and sustainability. 

  • Collaborate with the design team to integrate chosen materials seamlessly into the overall car design. 

​

3. Renewable Energy Systems: 

  • Work on the optimisation and mechanical testing of innovative solar panels for Sunswift 8, considering electrical efficiency, performance reliability, and sustainability. 

  • Investigate advanced materials and their properties for use in energy systems throughout Sunswift 8 such as various semiconductors, surface coatings, and functional materials. 

  • Collaborate with the Chassis and Bodywork team on the integration of solar panels into the car's structure, evaluating the potential manufacturing methods and material compatibilities.

4. Alternative Energy Storage: 

  • Investigate and propose materials for storing alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen, within the car. 

  • Collaborate with Chassis and Bodywork team to design safe and efficient storage solutions for alternative energy. 

​

5. Life Cycle Assessment: 

  • Conduct a Life Cycle Assessment on the materials used in the car starting all the way from sourcing of the materials to the final implementation to find the embodied energy, carbon dioxide output or any environmental impacts of the vehicle to recommend further changes in future builds.

  • Test the solar array on the car embedded with MPPT

  • Conduct Life Cycle Assessment study of the solar car process (different role with typical renewable engineer, collaborate with Material Science Team)

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Renewable Engineering, Photovoltaic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field 

  • Have done SOLA 2060 or SOLA 2051 or other similar courses for students in Renewable Engineering and Photovoltaic Engineering, have done ELEC 2134 or ELEC 2133 for students in Electrical Engineering. 

  • Familiar with LTSpice or some similar simulation software 

  • Experience in AutoCAD/Solidworks modelling, PCB design, C/C++/python/matlab simulation, or any other types of simulation software 

  • Strong problem-solving ability, strong resilience and persistence. 

  • For LCA analysis role: Familiar with OpenLCA or other similar software, will be good if related course(s) have been done.
