Individual Donors
The Sunswift Project
The project is run by students and overseen by academics at the university, including the vice-chancellor, and technical representatives from Boeing Australia and TAFE NSW. The students working on the project are all volunteers, and a great deal of the raw material we use is received as in-kind donations from our industry partners. Our most significant cost is that of the solar array which will cover the entire top surface of the new vehicle. By contributing to our adopt-a-cell program, you will provide funds to buy high performance silicon solar cells that will allow Sydney’s only solar racing vehicle to compete with the world's best.
Sunswift IV…
Sunswift IV will be a leader on the international stage, boasting advanced aerodynamic design and high-efficiency electrical systems. In addition Sunswift IV will be moving away from the space-age solar vehicles of the past towards more practical everyday vehicles that may one day be suitable for widespread use. For the first time in Sunswift’s history the driver will be seated upright and use a steering wheel (previous cars employed push-pull steering), they will also be able to get in and out of the car in under 15 seconds. Developed using high-tech computational fluid dynamics techniques, Sunswift IV's sleek design ensures minimum wind resistance while the car’s body shell provides a light and strong framework thanks to an intelligent use of carbon fibre.
The Race Is On!
In October 2009 the team will race Sunswift IV in the World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide. This grueling 3000km race attracts entrants from around the globe who complete the course in as little as four days. Apart from designated media stops, the race is conducted in one non-stop stage (8am to 5pm each day) and is truly the world’s premier solar racing event.
