Community Events and Education

The Sunswift Project is not only committed to the education of team members but also that of the wider community. By attending events regularly, the team has a chance to raise public awareness of environmental issues, intriguing engineering and the workings of the team with reference to our sponsors and technical partners. These events often raise a good deal of media (including radio, television, magazines and newspapers), both local and national. To view some of this generated media, visit our Media Archive.

School Tours

Visits to high schools are an important part of Sunswift's community education objective. The UNSW SRT aims to educate young people about renewable energy and represent the potentials of tertiary education. Please contact us for further information.

Sunsprint

Sunsprint is an annual event held in every state of Australia that gives school students the opportunity to build a model solar car from scratch. As usual, the NSW challenge is hosted by the University of NSW and UNSW Solar Racing Team members form the majority of the crew alongside university staff with general duties including setting and packing up the track and running the event on the day. The organisation of the event is done by Prem Kumar (UNSW Faculty of Science) and sponsored by Jaycar Electronics and the Commonwealth Bank. It allows school children to learn about renewable energy, meet members of the UNSW SRT, and take part in an enjoyable yet competitive practical activity.

CeBIT

CeBIT is the largest corporate event for information and communication technologies in Australia, it is run annually and Sunswift has been an invited/sponsored participant since 2003 and our attendance is made possible by Hannover Fairs.

Eco-Living Fairs

Eco-Living fairs are commonly annual events held in various neighbourhoods to demonstrate the potentials of sustainability. The UNSW SRT is a regular particapant in the Randwick Eco-Living Fair and our attendance is made possible by Randwick City Council. In 2008 Sunswift also attended the Mudgee Small Farm Field Day and the Orange Eco-Living Fair. Other similar fairs attended include the Sustainable Living Competition Awards Ceremony (2005), and the Smart Transport Show (2006), Mosman Eco Living Expo (2005), Macarthur Area Careers Expo (2006), Ultimo Science Festival (2006) and the UNSW Guild Eco Fair (2005).

Car Rallies

The UNSW SRT is a regular attendee of car rallies and other similar events. In 2008 Sunswift III attended the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Rally, the Wings Wheels and Wine Festival in Mudgee, Shannon's Eastern Creek Classic Car Rally and the Autosalon Exhibition.

Corporate Events

Sunswift III is also available as a display item for corporate events. In 2008 Sunswift III was displayed at the opening of the Centre for Energy Research and Policy Analysis ( CERPA). It has also been displayed at events hosted by our sponsors and technical partners, such as the Boeing Open Day (2006), Wrigley's Open Day (2006), NICTA Techfest, NRMA Motorfest, NRMA AGM (2005) and the NRMA Advanced Technology Exhibition (2005).

Members of the team also attended the NSW Sustainable Development Conference 2009 thanks to Hallmark Editions Pty Ltd. The two day conference included talks on environmental issues by a number of influencial people such as Tim Rogers the Deputy Director-General of the Policy and Programs Group, Department of Environment and Climate Change and Brett Whitworth - Director of Regional Coordination, NSW Department of Planning. The UNSW Solar Car Racing Team was also fortunate enough to make an address at the conference.

Testing Runs

Testing runs are not only an important part of the research and development of solar cars but are also a good oppertunity to see the solar car out and about. In January 2009 Sunswift III became the first solar car to navigate Sydney's ring road culminating in a Harbour Bridge crossing.
