24 August 2008: Shannons Eastern Creek Classic
Beginning in the early hours of the morning, 5 team members (Jono, Helga, John, Campbell and Glen) ventured out with Sunswift III to the Eastern Creek International Raceway to feature amongst 1700 classic cars dating back to the early 1900’s (and possibly even earlier).
The team arrived early which allowed for an easy set up before the majority of the classics arrived (despite the dilemma of initially not being able to find the key to our stall). New displays and an excellent spot near the track let the team settle comfortably and converse with many spectators who had only ever heard about solar cars in the media. An incredible line up of vintage cars permitted spectators to behold somewhat of a journey through time in contrasting vehicle designs, with Sunswift III being at the futuristic end of the spectrum.
When Jono and Helga left at midday, the remaining three team members had only but to watch vintage car lovers drive their prized vehicles around the raceway. Many of these car lovers were intrigued by the technology behind Sunswift III and were curious about its role in the future of transportation.
At 4pm the team packed up and headed back to the workshop. Many thanks to Dan Powers and the rest of the Mudgee crew for assisting the team during the day.

07 August 2008: North American Solar Challenge
At the end of July Sunswift sent two of its’ members, Jono and Campbell to the North American Solar Challenge. The race begins in Dallas, Texas and 24 solar cars race over 2400 miles before finishing in Calgary, Alberta.
Jono and Campbell were volunteer observers meaning they had the privilege of travelling with teams, logging their progress and ensuring they followed the rules. They were provided accommodation and food by the team of their choice. Jono and Campbell made many new friends and were often in trouble for chatting with teams rather than observing. They also asked important questions about team management and design ideas and returned with a mechanical design proposal for Sunswift IV.

19 July 2008: Mudgee Small Farm Field Day
This weekend saw Sunswift yet again visiting Mudgee, this time for the Mudgee Small Farm Field Day. After arriving at Hazelbrook Farm in the early hours of the morning, four brave sunswifters and three new friends (also from UNSW) set themselves up for a full day of meeting and teaching a very interested and interesting crowd. Everyone had a story to tell, from solar panel installations to carbon schemes. We had the opportunity to further perfect the presentation skills developed during the high school tour.
After a long day, we prepared ourselves for the trip back to Sydney. Alas it was not meant to be, 35km out of Mudgee the axle housing on one of the trailer wheels broke. Fortunately due to Clara's superb driving skills and calm nature we came to a slow stop on the shoulder of the road and neither people nor car were injured. Sunswift would like to extend our deepest thanks to the other car that stopped by the side of the road to help us, to the people who kept stopping and asking if we were okay and to those who provided Caitlin with a reflective vest (her original was only fluorescent) and a torch.
Finally, we had to get the trailer (and solar car within) towed back to Mudgee where we all spent the night. The next morning (after a well-deserved sleep in) Dan took us back in to town where we met Lyndon, a mechanical whiz and developer of renewable technologies himself who was able to tell us exactly what was wrong with the trailer. He even pulled the U-bolts out of his own trailer in an attempt to fix ours, unfortunately we were unable to fix the trailer on Sunday so it has remained in Mudgee where Lyndon has kindly offered to fix it and the team will return later this week to pick it up. Sunswift would like to thank both Lyndon for giving up his own time and resources to aid us, and Dan Power whose ongoing support, energy and enthusiasm has been an inspiration to us over the last six months.
