| | | | | | Today was the final day for SunRace 2003. The first part of the day was a display of the cars at a ceremonial finish line on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. This was where the world's first solar car journey 20 years ago finished. As the teams arrived the weather was looking pretty miserable, with the rain coming down steadily. By the time we rolled down to the Opera House the rain eased of just long enough. The teams were flagged in by Paul Forward, the CEO of the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, and then all took their places in front of the ceremonial finish line. As a large crowd milled around the teams one by one took a photo call in front of the finish line before it was time to pack them away in their trailers for the trip to UNSW for the awards presentation. We started packing up just as the rain started to return, and by the time we had left the opera house we were soaked. The awards ceremony was held in the Leighton Hall in The Scientia at UNSW. UNSW's Vice Chancellor, and patron of the UNSW Solar Racing Team, Professor Wyatt R Hume was on hand to welcome the teams and make some award presentations. All teams were honoured with awards for their performances and their determination in completing SunRace 2003. Aurora, with their team from RMIT, took out first place overall and first place WSC class solar car. UNSW SRT was just beaten to second place by the Blue International Eagle from the Chisolm Institute, who were no doubt pleased both by the improved performance of their car and the unfavourable weather conditions for solar cars. UNSW SRT was awarded second place in the WSC solar car class. After the presentations there was an afternoon tea where the teams had a final chance to mingle and chat before finally it was time to part and head off home for some well-deserved rest.
