12 February 2002    (Pre-Event Day 2)
[Report Entry]

Back to SunRace 2002 (Main)

Day 2 began at 5:30 for half of us so we could have the array ready to start charging the batteries. The rest of the group got an extra hours sleep, but they too soon regretted having to get up. With the batteries charging, the rest of the group got on with packing and we departed at about 9:30. It wasn't long after we got out of Dubbo we pulled out the car and started driving it.

This morning final packing was completed and final arrangements were made for the trip. The drive out to Molong was largly uneventful, with a quick stop for fuel and lunch. Shortly after Molong we pulled the car out to put some more kilometres on it and we were pleased with our progress except for some small problems with the trackers. It also gave us a chance to give our drivers some more practice on the open road.

A few hours later we pulled into a park in Nyngan, where we took a long lunch. As we arrived a local primary school was just finishing their swimming carnival, and about 50 school kids all converged on the car. Drivers Andrew Ridings and Tim Wardrop spent some time talking to the wide-eyed year 5 and 6 students and their equally curious teachers. They answered questions about the car and what it was like to sit in the driver's seat. As always the most popular questions were, "How fast does it go?" (we've had it up to 120km/h) and, "How hot does it get in there?" (very warm). They were also keen to find out how the car worked. After a short while some of us started doing work on the array, while the others... well the photos say it all.

It was after 7pm before we finally got away and started heading towards Wilcannia, with a short break in Cobar to refuel and to take a driver change. The team finally arrived late at night, and were overwhelmed by the hospitality. The lady who ran Grahams Motel had gotten up just to let us in and we saw her again at 6:30am when we went to pick up the milk.
